caramelized onion hamburger steak

Smothered in red wine gravy...

Comforting, rich, and satisfying.

Caramelized Onion Hamburger Steak
with Red Wine Gravy

2 lbs. Ground Beef (lean 90/10)
1 packet Lipton Onion Soup Mix
1 tbsp. Mrs. Dash
1 tbsp. Grill Seasoning
2 tbsp. Worcester Sauce
10 oz. Dry Red Wine
2 cups Beef Stock
3-4 tbsp. Flour
Salt and Pepper, to taste
2-3 Sweet Onions, sliced

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground meat, onion soup mix, Mrs. Dash, grill seasoning, Worcester sauce, and 2 oz. red wine. Form meat mixture into patties (about 5).

Over medium heat, in a large skillet with high sides, brown patties 5-6 minutes per side. Remove from pan, and transfer to a plate.

Over low heat, caramelize sliced onions in the meat drippings (add 1 tbsp. olive oil if needed). Stir frequently, and season with salt and pepper. Remove from pan, and transfer to a bowl.

In the same skillet, over medium heat, add equal amounts of fat (meat grease or olive oil) and flour. Whisk in flour until lumps are removed. Cook flour/fat (roux) mixture for 30 seconds. Vigorously whisk in beef stock and remaining red wine. Continue whisking until no lumps remain. Bring to a simmer, and reduce to low.

Place patties back in skillet, and toss in gravy. Cover each patty with caramelized onions. Over low heat, cover skillet and warm patties through.

Serve with Whipped Red Potatoes, or your favorite mashed potatoes.

Hamburger Steak is a popular dish here :)

I wanted you to know I made this tonight. It was way too spicy for my family. I think I might try it again, cutting the spices in half maybe, and skipping the gravy, the caramelized onions were great! The potatoes were very good!

Anita,
I am so sorry that the hamburger steak recipe did not turn out well for you! I hate that.

I'm wondering if maybe we have different brands of grill seasoning. Some are spicier than others. Who knows?!

Please try another recipe, and taste it before seasoning it with pepper. There is a good possibility that I, as a Texas gal, am used to spicier foods. I'll adjust this recipe, and others, for spiciness.

Hugs,
Britt
