Yesterday, while shopping at my favorite, local grocery store, I was reminded just how important a simple smile can be to someone. As I was about to round the cereal aisle, there was an elderly man leisurely pushing his cart. While waiting for him to pass, I smiled politely, not thinking much about it. It was the kind of
casual smile that does not hold a lot of meaning, thought, or spiritedness. But then, this sweet, little, old man kindheartedly says, "Thanks for the smile." He was entirely genuine and had a beaming, toothless grin; which was the most charming smile that I have ever seen. Beholding his radiant happiness, I found myself returning the smile, only this time it was real, compassionate, and joyful. As I continued shopping, I could not help but think of how something as small as a smile, can truly brighten someone's day. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is so easy to forget to extend authentic kindness to others. I have been "just polite enough" on too many occasions. It is time for me to be thoughtful in my intentions and actions, because I never know who really needs the soothing compassion of a stranger.
We have the power to make others feel better, or feel worse.
I choose to smile.
The gracious man, with the easy grin, may have been appreciative of my smile, but I know that I needed his smile, too.
P.S. I saved $36.07 with coupons! Woo-Hoo!
